Getting more out of life by risking your comfort.

Trying to Get out of your comfort zone? For most people one of the biggest goals in life is to live comfortably. Nothing wrong with that, after all we all are wired to find it; but as I have personally found, comfort kills creativity and self-improvement. If you think for a moment, us humans really don’t need all that much to live comfortably, as long as we have a safe home to sleep, some food and some recreation in our lives, our basic needs are all meet and we can actually live pretty comfortable. Most people today in developed countries are able to find a reliable source of income (job) to take care of all these basic necessities, if you push a little harder even a couple of added bonuses: the fancy car and dinner, a two week vacation to a Caribbean island and that brand new smartphone that we can’t seem to live without.

Time goes by and we all keep living very comfortably running in our hedonic treadmills and stay stuck in the same place. I know many people who live 10, 20 and 30 years doing the same thing every day, every year. I believe it is our duty as humans to try to advance our lives as much as possible. The more we learn and open our minds to new things, the better we are at treating people, improving not only our lives but the ones of those around us and society as a whole.

Get out of comfort zone

We need to put ourselves in uncomfortable situations in order to advance in life. If we are always hiding from the things that cause us anxiety and fear we will never be able to excel in life. Living life on autopilot can be easy and might actually feel pretty good. You don’t have to think much once you reach some level of success, you go to work, you get some money to buy the things you need and some of the ones you desire, wake up early the next day, rinse and repeat.

Very deeply most of us want more from life, everyone has his or her own dreams and goals. Some of us want to never have to be stuck in an office again, others want to open a dog rescue facility, while others just want to be able to have more time for their family. Whatever the reason may be, doing the same thing every day for 40 years will not change the outcome. As Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Yet most people live their entire lives this way.

Take some time today, and hopefully everyday to think about those uncomfortable situations that might help you get closer to your goals. All those cold calls you know might get you more clients but you are afraid to get rejected, throwing away and donating all that clutter in your house and your closet that just waste your time and resources, the job you hate but you are afraid to leave, the list goes on and on.

This applies to every aspect of life. From business to health and relations. Don’t be afraid to take on more challenges, to try new things and experience more. I’m personally far away from being able to fully commit to living uncomfortably to finally find comfort in my life. But I know that every day that I take a new risk is a day that will get me closer to my dreams.

Most of us have seen this play out in one way or another. The pretty girl at the party that you were so afraid of talking to ended up going out with the most unlikely guy just because he had the balls. The business opportunity you always though about but never got started, is now up and running because someone was not afraid to jump in and made it happen. The diet you thought you could never keep up with, 5 years have gone by and you know you will have the body and health you know you always wanted if you had just started. The list goes on and on.

Get out of your comfort zone

Try to put yourself on as many uncomfortable situations as possible. At the end you will find out that what used to be uncomfortable now feels second nature.

If you are ever in a situation where you feel stuck try to be bold and take a decision to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. Most of our fears and worries never become a reality, all of those things that keep you in the same place because of your worries will never even happen. What will happen is that you will miss the chance to living life to your fullest potential and hopefully accomplish many of your goals and dreams.
